SentrySafe, best-known for its home and small office fire protective/ security-storage safes, has introduced a line of fire-safe and waterproof hard drive containers. The devices are designed to protect data (and some paper files) from fire and water disasters, as well as computer crashes and theft. The product line ranges from an individual hard drive in a protective container to a larger safe that can store and protect not only a back-up hard drive but other storage discs and paper files as well.
The smallest device (the QA0004) features a high capacity USB 2.0 hard drive (80GB, MSRP $259.99 and 160GB, MSRP $339.99) shielded inside a fire-safe/water-resistant case. The hard drives include software to back up important computer files, data encryption software, and the ability to restore the data stored on the drive to any computer. The case is certified as fully submersible for up to 24 hours and to withstand temperatures up to 1550° F for 30 minutes. If the hard drive is damaged by fire or water, the company will attempt to recover your data free of charge, as well as provide you with a new unit. The device, compatible with Windows and Mac Operating Systems, is small enough to fit on your desk.
The largest devices in the line are the QE4531 and the QE5541 fire-safe/water-resistant safes (1.2 cu. ft., MSRP $419.99 and 2.0 cu. ft., $519.99 respectively). You don’t even have to open up the safe to store data on the hard drive inside. The safes provide an external USB port to connect your laptop or desktop to a 2 ½” hard drive that is safely stored inside the safe’s door pocket. There is also room inside the safes for up to 120 CDs / DVDs in jewel cases, paper files and folders (letter size), and other important or valuable items. The safes are certified for two-hour fire protection of CDs, DVDs, USB drives and memory sticks up to 1850°F; for water resistance in up to eight inches, for up to 24 hours; and to withstand a 30-foot drop. The safes can also be bolted to the floor for additional security.
