Internet Legal Research on a Budget

This book will help you conduct legal research quickly and to learn about the best reliable free (or low-cost) resources online. Our goal is to save you time and money and help you avoid frustration. We have tested and evaluated each site, described how to actually use the site (often step-by-step), and included numerous screen shots to better illustrate the steps.

The authors of this book share a common background that uniquely qualifies them to write this book: We have both have had careers as lawyers, as well as law librarians.

The Cybersleuth's Guide to the Internet

The newly updated 13th edition of the Cybersleuth's Guide to the Internet features Internet investigative search strategies and tips.

This new edition includes a broader review of ways researchers can use the information posted in Social Networking profiles as a powerful investigative research tool and source of evidence. It also includes more detailed recommendations for locating and using free public records, investigative research sites, and people finder resources available for free on the Internet, as well as low-cost pay services, such as TLO. The new edition also examines ways researchers can use free and low cost caselaw and docket databases as a valuable source of investigative and background information.

LEGAL RESEARCH CONTENT FROM "THE CYBERSLEUTH’S GUIDE TO THE INTERNET" SHIFTED TO "INTERNET LEGAL RESEARCH ON A BUDGET" | INVESTIGATIVE RESEARCH CONTENT GREATLY EXPANDED IN "THE CYBERSLEUTH'S GUIDE"

For those of you who own prior editions of The Cybersleuth’s Guide to the Internet, you may notice that while this new edition retains information about case law databases (but only free ones) and dockets (free and low cost), it no longer contains legal research topics that were unrelated to investigative research (e.g., statutes, ordinances, etc.). The content from those deleted chapters became the basis for Internet Legal Research on a Budget.

What are people saying about this book?

I am the director of a Law Library who has a large clientele of solo lawyers and self-represented people. This is an excellent resource to help them identify resources that let them get the most for their research dollars. I highly recommend this title for public law library collections and for attorneys who want to make the most of their time and resources.

What people said about the last edition of this book?

This is an invaluable resource for lawyers, non-lawyers and libraries. The authors are both well known in the fields of technology and legal research having written several other books. This book is in its 12th edition which should give the reader some insight into its importance and usefulness.

The book is laid out in easy-to-read and understand fashion. The authors include an in-depth table of contents and an exhaustive index as well as an abbreviated version. A reader who does not read the book cover to cover still can find useful information quickly and easily.

The large 8-1/2" x 11" format makes the pages easy to read while allowing for ample screen shots of various webpages. A useful feature is a two-page listing of the new additions/changes from the previous versions.

I have used this edition in my work as a Reference Law Librarian including a presentation to the West Virginia Library Association's Annual Conference in 2012. I highly recommend this book and feel it is suitable for lawyers, non-lawyers, public and law libraries.
