In an email to users, Google has announced that it is closing Knol service. Existing content posted to Knol will be visible to the public through April 30, 2012. After that, content will no longer be visible to the public, but creators will have until October 1, 2012 to download or export their content. After october 1, Knol content will no longer be available.
In late December 2007, Google announced Knol in what looked like a bid to develop a rival to the near-ubiquitous online encyclopedia Wikipedia. According to a post on Google’s official blog at the time by Udi Manber, Google’s Vice President of Engineering, “the goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions.”
