Legal Dockets Online offers a collection of links to state and local Bar association membership rosters and directories in all states that offer them free on the Internet.

Links are provided to associations in 47 states (the site notes that Delaware, New Hampshire and Rhode Island do not offer a bar member directory online). The resources are arranged all on one page, by state. Every association offers different levels of accessiblity and search functions.

It is especially important to remember that not all state bars have mandatory membership (e.g. Tennessee). Therefore, not finding the name of a particular attorney in the membership directory of the bar of the state in which they practice does not necessarily mean that the lawyer is not licensed to practice.
